ITP: LilyPond 1.5.73

LilyPond 1.5.73 is now available for evaluation at:

    http://lilypond.org/cygwin/tar/lilypond

After a successful installation of lilypond (and its dependencies,
notably guile, python, tetex), you should be able to run, eg,

    ly2dvi -p /usr/doc/lilypond-1.5.73-1/input/example-1

which should produce a simple piece of sheet music as:

    example-1.dvi
    example-1.ps
    example-1.pdf

To get started, see the Tutorial at

    http://lilypond.org/Documentation/user/out-www/lilypond/Tutorial.html

We're heading for LilyPond 1.6 real soon now, and it would be grand if
LilyPond would be included in Cygwin by then. I'm a bit later than I
had wanted, but tetex maintainership came unexpected, took quite some
time, and that had to take priority.

Accurate installation instructions for LilyPond on Windows (ie, on
Cygwin) depends on whether it gets included in the Cygwin
distribution. For the package itself, it doesn't have any
consequences; it would save new LilyPond users (currently about 10-100
per month, http://lilypond.org/stats) the typing of the additional
url.

So, may we have your votes and comments please.

Greetings,
Jan.

Btw, the lilypond.org Cygwin mirror has now been discontinued. To
install or upgrade, run http://cygwin.com/setup.exe, select
a mirror, and add `http://lilypond.org/cygwin' as extra url.
