Tclsh: why exec replaces { with \{ ?

Or just how to make it getting rid of it?
It makes unable to, for example, run an awk program from inside Tcl script.
Try this:
exec -- echo "This is {in braces}"
On ActiveTcl this does not happen. I also saw exec replacing / with \, but now I am not sure how to reproduce it.
