One thing that's nice about using the web mail is that a) it's accessible
from anywhere, and b) it stays with you as you change companies.  Oh, I'm
sure the same could be said about some other mail providers, and Yahoo!
does offer a premium (paid, ad-free) mail service, but this is where the
"free" part comes in...

P.S. The '!' is actually part of the official company name.  It's the only
one in the footer, FWIW.
