I think a lot of people who use cygwin (like myself) would actualy prefer to
do that. But the reality is that many of us don't have the choice to
chose the platform they prefer because we can't (or don't attempt to)
explain to our (usually less technical) boses that they really should
drop windows althogether and use technically superior (translation: faster
and more reliable) and cheaper alternatives (i.e. Linux).
So instead we try to make our life easier by at least using the tools that
resemble those found on the real OS. One can argue that up until
recently there was a good reason for not seriously considering Linux
because of the lack of office suites, but now with so many things
already released or soon to be released for linux (i.e. Corel suite,
StarOffice, etc) I don't think this still qualifies as a good reason
to stay with or chose windows. The stock marked reaction to Linux IPO's also
seems to indicate that the reality of Linux is started to sink in
even with technically less competent people.
This is just my personal opinion and not the official view of
the company I work for.
Best regards,
Tomislav Goles
