Or maybe I misunderstand the question.
If the messages are on standard error, you need
to redirect that to standard output - a pipe
connects output to input, and leaves error alone.
Standard error sits on file descriptor 2, and
standard output sits on file descriptor 1. So,
to do the redirection, you want something looking
like this:
xxx 2>&1 | less
I don't know if that's what you want, but it's
the answer to your question. :)
