Thanks Elfyn,
those srtange path statements don't appear in /etc/profile or
~/.bash_profile, although it gave me a good excuse to clean up ;).
When you install inetd as a service you run inetd
--install-as-service so unless it picks up the current environment I don't
see how that is causing a problem.
