Could the following be a related problem?
man zip gives error message "no manual entry for zip", even though zip.1 is
present in man1. Most of the other entries in man1 can be accessed
normally, but man man also fails with the same error message, even though
man.1 is present in man1.
This was in fact why I put directory "zip" in my HOME directory: to extract
the manpages, which I had thought were not installed. They were installed,
but are not being found.
