From your cygcheck:
perl 5.8.0-3

Please try to upgrade to 5.8.0-5 at first. There are good chances that the binmode bug fixed in 5.8.0-5 resolves this problem.

Thanks that did the trick. Also caused me to finally update to 1.5.3. That was a little scary but all's been smooth so far.
Obligatory witty saying: I hit the CTRL key but I'm still not in control!
