Ok.  I checked this on linux not cygwin and cygwin doesn't have a man page.
Apologies if I confused anyone.  The man page is much clearer than the info
file.

FWIW, this has been discussed in this mailing list on many occasions.  A
mailing list search would unearth me pointing to the documentation in
the past and probably people providing specific help as well.
