I assume you're using bash.  What are the values of $HISTFILE and
$HISTFILESIZE?  Since you do seem to have history until you quit the
session, I won't ask about $HISTIGNORE or "set -o | grep history".

P.S. I'll let someone else speak up about the pitfalls of spaces in
usernames.
