See the bottom of the script, there is an option 'all' which runs
all needed script targets, there are some more eg. 'strip'.
It should work to run
$ ./httpd-2.0.52-1.sh all
which will create a new binary tarball and a new source tarball.

If this script has patched configure.in, won't the whole thing need regenerating with the auto-* toolset? Or does the script take care of that too?

The included patch is created after building the whole package manually, so there are two possibilities: - it includes all changes - it includes all changes

They use no automake, so actually there are updates to libtool related
files and updates in Makefile.in. If there are changes to configure.in
then the resulting changes to configure should also be included in the
patch.
The changes in Makefile.in and the other Makefile templates are
handcrafted, this is also the reason why I am not interested to maintain
this as a package. Besides this there seems to be a problem with the
binary, one can download only 8k at once which is annoying when you
want to get something greater than this. I couldn't figure out what the
problem is, it works great when connecting Apache2 local, it fails when
it is connected via network.
