Just a wild guess, I know almost nothing of the WOW64 subsystem (yet)

Tried cygwin1-20050909.dll.bz2 and I report no problems except this
problem, that didn't go away.

I can produce a strace if it can help (I ask before because, well, it's
a fair amount of spam if it is not needed ;)).
