Btw., it's really not tricky to create a filename with special
characters:

  #include <fcntl.h>
  #include <locale.h>
  #include <wchar.h>

  {
    wchar_t w_fname[] = { 'q', 'q', 0x20ac /* euro sign */, 0 };
    char fname[32];
    int fd;
