Hmm. There are some symlinks, but not to the other user's home
directory.

I know what it is. User error, I suppose. I did:
$ grep -Irl foo .*

I should have done
$ grep -Irl foo .[^\.]*
which correctly searches just the dotfiles without traversing "..".
