I suppose that "/etc/redhat-release" is not as well-known a concept as he or I had thought. As I understand it, it's a file that's maintained by the Redhat installation software to show, in an easy human-readable way, what is currently installed on the running system. It is only updated by new installs run on the machine. I think that some other distributions put something in /etc/motd.

There's the LSB, Linux Standards Base, and it supports a "lsb_release" command, try "lsb_release -a" for a start, here a few samplers:
